RIP Jack Layton

This is truly sad news. Jack Layton, the Leader of the Opposition, has died today at age 61. You can read the story on the CBC News website.

I'm a huge fan of Jack Layton, as well as of his wife, Olivia Chow (my MP) and his son, Mike Layton, a wonderful city councillor in Toronto.

Jack Layton was a positive, progressive, tireless crusader. He cared about vulnerable people, about families, about the planet and about making Canada a great, just and sustainable place to live. We are all poorer for his loss, but his legacy is very much alive.

I don't want to get political here. No matter what side of the aisle you sit on, Jack Layton was a great Canadian resource, a fiercely intelligent and dedicated worker. My deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and loved ones. The country is mourning with you.

Update: I wanted to add a link to Layton's final letter, written two days before he died. It's posted here on CBC and it's deeply moving.
